I have very limited experience with graphic novels. The Barefoot Gen series should be required reading, and I loved one of and hated one of Alison Bechdel’s graphic novels. I think I read Maus once upon a time but I couldn’t tell you much about it. And that’s pretty much it!
I tell you this because my impressions and opinions of Nimona are not those of a person who’s passionate about graphic novels or who has an excellent understanding of the genre. I’m not opposed to graphic novels certainly, but they just don’t generally make their way on my radar.
But this one did, thanks to Book Riot’s Best of 2015 Box, and I’m pretty stinking glad about that! I loved a lot of things about this, including the strong female lead. She was capable and great and it was a welcome thing to see.
I wasn’t expecting this to be funny but good gosh was it ever! Most of the jokes were gently poking fun at your typical superhero / villian tropes and they were well appreciated.
The artwork was fantastic, the story was solid, and it was jut all around a really fun read. I was so excited about this book that a friend lent me the other works by Noelle Stevenson, The Lumberjanes, and I’m excited to dig into them as well!
