Yay, it’s one of my favorite times of the month – Book(ish) Box times! We even got our doorbell fixed so I didn’t have to drive to the town over to pick up this box! Exciting stuff.
This was another great month for me but I also had some concerns for the first time. Let’s get to it!
The theme this month was Villians. It’s not really my jam but so far everything these folks have sent out has been amazing, even if it’s not in my wheelhouse. We’ll really be tested next month: the theme is Harry Potter. I’m certainly not anti-Potter but the books / movies don’t really excite me.
Anway, this month! Villians! Bad folks! First the shirt. I’m gonna need you guys to forgive me for a whole host of things here. First, I forgot to take a picture before wearing this. I had to drag it out of my dirty clothes basket to snap this one, so it’s wrinkled and yes there is cake all over it. I don’t apologize for the cake stains at all but am sorry that it’s wrinkled. Second, for whatever reason this picture would not flip! I know how to make pictures right side up! Life is hard you guys.
The shirt, as always, is from Appraising Pages. It says “Every fairytale needs a good old fashioned villain,” which is a reference to Sherlock. I like this shirt quite a lot. The color is good, the font is good – it’s good!
Next is this mug from Coffee Reading Writing that I’m told is a Harry Potter reference. I have a friend who will go absolutely bonkers for this mug – she has ALWAYS tattooed on her arm with some Harry Potter symbol or another. And, confirmed! I just texted her pictures of it and then she called me on the telephone to express her extreme happiness.
This candle from The Melting Library smells great! Apparently Warner, after whom this particular candle is named, is a villan of some sort, though I’ve never heard of him. The offers this quite which apparently provides some sort of context:
“I want to be the friend you fall hopelessly in love with. The one you take into your arms and into your bed and into the private world you keep trapped in your head. I want to be that kind of friend. The one who will memorize the things you say as well as the shape of your lips when you say them. I want to know every curve, every freckle, every shiver of your body.
I want to know where to touch you, I want to know how to touch you. I want to know convince you to design a smile just for me. Yes, I do want to be your friend. I want to be your best friend in the entire world.”
― Tahereh Mafi, Unravel Me
It has a very strong scent when opened but the scent as it’s burning is not nearly as strong. I couldn’t figure out what the smell was so I asked Sam. “Um, soap?!” he said. I think he may be on to something!
The necklace from the Lunar Chronicles, made by The Geeky Cauldron, was by far my favorite piece in this box. I don’t know anything about the book (series?) it’s based on but this is a really nice necklace! I was surprised that the listed value is only $10.
It’s surprisngly heavy! Not like, “Ahhh, shit, this is breaking my neck!” heavy or anything but it’s got a really satisfying weight to it. And the other side is a mirror!
I’m not usually a big fan of gold jewerly but it turns out I like it just fine when it has this vintagy vibe. The chain is also longer than usual on this type of necklace. It nestles right down between my boobs. Perfect! However, there was one pretty big issue with it.
It showed up broken. I did reach out to Justine at The Book(ish) Box and she offered to send me a new one. By that time I’d realized I could just attach the clasp to both sides of the necklace. It was actually kind of tricky but the necklace is long enough to go over my head so I won’t have to do it again. All in all, not a huge deal. I don’t expect every order I place with businesses to be perfect and I apperciate that she offered to send me a replacement.
Finally we have a bookmark from Drop and Give Me Nerdy. Once again I’m not familiar with the books this is based on: Grisha Trilogy.
This bookmark is fine but it brings me to my second issue with this box. The listed value for this is $4.50. I don’t get it. This is a standard paper bookmark. It seems like a freebie promotional item so I’m not sure why the value is so high.
That’s not a huge issue for me either though. I don’t generally do a cost analysis on boxes because I’m not interested in it. I don’t care what the going rate for something is. My question is always: Would I have paid _price of box_ for this array of things? And the answer with this box is an very loud and screechy YES! Even if I don’t know the source material for most of the items.
