Subscription Box Review: Book Riot Best of 2015 Box

Ahh! I was so excited to get my Best of 2015 box from Book Riot today! The box cost me $100 and was described thusly:

Get 4 of the best books of 2015 and 3 awesome bookish goodies in this exclusive holiday box. (Does not contain any repeats from Book Riot’s Quarterly or Riot Read subscriptions. Total retail value of contents exceeds $100. )

It came in a medium sized box conveniently boxed in a large box. I’m not sure what that was about, but I didn’t spend much time worrying about it. I wanted my books and bookish items!

The first thing I pulled out was this amazing Banned Books Heat Reacitve Mug. It’s currently sold out of the Out of Print site (ironic? yes? no?) but according to Book Riot the retail value is $12.

I have the banned book socks and they’re weirdly the best socks I’ve ever had. My mom gave them to me last Christmas and I thought they were cute and all, but was shocked when I tried them on that they’re easily the most comfortable, well-made socks I’ve ever had.

This mug is made by the same folks and it’s also of great quality. It’s a very heavy mug, and it’s quite a bit thicker than most mugs – though I imagine that’s due to the color changing technology. I love this mug! When it’s cold (as the top of the mug is in the picture above) most words of each book are blacked out. When it gets hot, the blackouts are removed and you can see those banned book titles in all their glory.

Next up was another item by Out of Print, this amazing Library Card Scarf! Retail value is $22.

First of all, obviously this scarf is super cute! Second, I am impressed with the quality of Out of Print merchandise! I know it’s hard to tell, what with the exclamation points popping up everywhere, but I love them! Their products could easily be just a simple gimmick but instead they’re creating really quality products that will last for a good long while.

The third bookish item appears to be exclusive to this box. It’s a handy key chain / bottle opener with great advice: Read Harder. This is already hanging out on my keys, along with my library card. The construction is good on this one so I’ll give it a value of about $10.

Now on to the books! As promised, they included four books and I’d heard of none of them, which is exciting. I didn’t read the description of any of them because I know I’ll be reading them soon. I will of course review them as I read them.

First was Welcome to Braggsville by T. Geronimo Johnson. This is a softcover and it’s currently selling on Amazon for $11.59. EDIT: I’ve read it. Here’s my review.

The blurb on the front reads:

“The most dazzling, most unsettling, most oh-my-God-listen-up novel you’ll read this year.”

Next was Nimona by Noelle Stevenson. Current price on Amazon is $8.26.

I opened this graphic novel to a random page and saw a bunch of sharks saying, “HA HA HA HA” so I have a feeling this is going to be a good read.

Our third book was The Bollywood Bride by Sonali Dev. This paperback copy is currently selling for $10.38 on Amazon.

I’m a little scared this is going to be a cheesy romance, but I’ll just have to trust that Book Riot wouldn’t do me dirty like that.

Finally, we have H Is for Hawk by Helen Macdonald. This is a hardcover and is available on Amazon for $15.60. EDIT: I read this book. This is my review.

This was selected as a COSTA Book of the Year in 2014 and won the Samuel Johnson Prize – whatever that is! One of the blurbs says it’s “beautiful and nearly feral” which I think is a pretty great way to describe a book.

So there we have it! If you bought each of these things separately (and agreed that the key chain is worth about $10) then you’d pay $89.63 without shipping. I’d say it’s easy to make up that difference in your shipping costs, but really this box is all about curation for me. A total home run! I wish someone would send me a box like this every month!
