Baby’s in Black: Astrid Kirchherr, Stuart Sutcliffe, and The Beatles in Hamburg is a graphic novel that follows the Beatles during the very beginning of their career. It’s rendered entirely in black and white, and the sketches are quite simple. There’s definitely a romantic feel to both the dialog and the artwork.
I must admit that I’m not the hugest fan of graphic novels or the Beatles – I don’t actively dislike either of them, but I also don’t seek them out. A friend lent this to me because he thought I’d love it. Unfortunately I didn’t love it, but it was a charming, if sometimes overly simple book. I would certainly recommend it to people who like both graphic novels and the Beatles, but it lacks the universal appeal that would make it a hit with a broader audience.
